I've been looking at the different ways a B&B takes payment vs Self Catering.
As a rule, SC asks for a substantial deposit, plus full payment well in advance of the booked holiday. Many seem to ask for a security deposit as well.
As a B&B we usually take the first night as a deposit at time of booking but then provide a full service with people making payment at the end of their stay.
If guests cancel the SC booking the owner has been paid already.
When guests cancel a B&B booking, usually at the last minute they create one hell of a fuss when told they have to pay the entire amount and if you do not have card details you are unlikely to get a single penny.
If you go abroad for a holiday you have to pay at least 6 weeks in advance as well.
It does seem that B&B operators offer terms far less strict than other sectors and leave themselves open to non arrivals without payment.
Has the time come for B&B owners to take a stricter approach to taking payment in advance like all other sectors?
This is something I like to hear others views on.
Thoughts?
